Why You Should Update Your Estate Plan in the Summer

millman law group update your estate plan in summer

Summer is a great time to update your estate plan before you head out on new adventures.

As summer draws near, many families will start to plan their family vacations. Whether traveling to a nearby town, state or far out of the country, it’s always important to make sure your estate plan is in order before you embark on your next adventure. You should update your estate plan in the summer before your plans get underway and before the even busier fall season arrives. Contact The Millman Law Group today if you’re ready to create or update your estate plan.

Review Your Estate Plan

The first step in updating your estate plan is to create one if you haven’t already. You should always have an experienced lawyer guide you through the process to ensure that you don’t miss anything important.

If your plan is already in place, you should review it at least once a year to make sure your choices are up to date. If there has been any change in dynamics with your family (birth, death, marriage, divorce), or if a named personal representative can no longer serve on your behalf, you will need to make changes to your estate plan.

Name Guardians for Minor Children

If guardianship is not already established in your estate plan, you will want to make sure this is done before any vacation. Whether your child or children are traveling with you does not make a difference. You should explicitly state who should be the primary caretaker of your children in your estate plan, so the decision is not left to the state.

Make Sure Your Documents Are Accessible

It’s always best to make sure your estate plan is in a safe place at all times. However, before going on vacation, you will want to make sure that your documents are accessible to a trustworthy person if the worst should happen. Having a designated friend or family member know where your information is will make the process easier if an unexpected situation occurs. Typically, your attorney will have copies of your executed estate plan. Your trusted person should have your attorney’s contact information.
